1) File Format: The customer provides a vector file (AI, CDR, PDF) or a high-resolution bitmap (300dpi+, TIFF/PSD).
2) Color Mode: Mirror image output is essential, as the paper and fabric are placed face-to-face during transfer.
3) Color Management: Use CMYK mode, taking into account the differences between screen display (RGB) and print color (CMYK). Dark umbrellas require an additional white ink layer (described later).
4) Segment Design: The umbrella is disassembled into individual panels (triangular/trapezoidal panels) according to the umbrella shape to ensure a seamless pattern after stitching.
Print the design on specialized transfer paper using thermal sublimation disperse dye ink.
Printer Type: Industrial piezoelectric inkjet printer (such as a modified Mimaki or Epson printer).
Special Treatment for Dark-Colored Umbrellas:
If printing a light/colorful design on dark-colored pongee or polyester umbrella fabric, first print a layer of white ink on the transfer paper as a base before printing the color design. Otherwise, the design will be covered by the dark base, and printing with white ink increases costs and process complexity.
Cut the pongee or polyester umbrella fabric to the shape of the umbrella panel (similar to digital direct printing).
Fabric Requirements: Must contain ≥65% polyester** (polyester fiber); otherwise, the sublimation effect will be poor. Pure polyester is optimal.
1). Alignment: Accurately align the printed transfer paper (design side) with the front of the umbrella fabric panel. 2) High-Temperature Pressing
Use a flatbed heat press (commonly used) or a roller heat transfer press.
Temperature: Typically 180°C - 220°C (adjusted depending on fabric and ink).
Pressure: Moderate, even pressure (approximately 0.8-1.2 kg/cm²).
Time: 15-60 seconds (shorter time will result in lighter colors, while longer time may cause the fabric to become brittle).
Sublimation Principle: High temperature causes the solid dye on the transfer paper to sublime, while high pressure causes it to penetrate the polyester fibers. After cooling, it re-fixes within the fibers.
After pressing, carefully peel off the transfer paper while it is still hot or after it has cooled (depending on the paper type).
Let the sheet cool naturally to stabilize the dye molecules within the fibers.
Washing: Removes paper residue and hardeners to soften the fabric (optional, but will improve quality). Finishing: High-temperature ironing ensures the cut pieces are flat and smooth, facilitating subsequent sewing.
7.Quality Inspection
Check color accuracy, pattern clarity, and any missing or false prints.
Test color fastness (rubbing and washing).
For dark-colored umbrellas, focus on checking the uniformity of the white base.
Sewing qualified pieces together to form a complete umbrella.
Assembling accessories such as ribs and handles to create a finished umbrella.
1) Vibrant and saturated colors: Sublimation dyes penetrate the fiber, resulting in vibrant, transparent colors.
2) Soft feel: The pattern blends seamlessly into the fabric, without a coating feel (digital direct printing may have a slight adhesive feel).
3) Weather resistance: UV-resistant, washable, and fade-resistant (because the dye is embedded in the fiber).
4) No color restrictions: Easily create gradients and complex, photo-quality patterns.
Heat transfer printing: Suitable for polyester umbrellas with a soft feel and high color fastness; customized dark umbrellas (accepting the increased cost); existing transfer paper printing capacity.
Digital direct printing: Suitable for nylon umbrellas and complex umbrella shapes (such as automatic umbrellas requiring cut-to-piece printing); fast delivery of light-colored umbrellas; and avoiding the hassle of mirrored designs.
Choosing the appropriate process based on fabric type, pattern complexity, and budget can significantly improve the quality and efficiency of customized umbrellas!
