How to making a umbrellas? the manufacturing process of a umbrella

By Yolanda August 28th, 2025 292 views

The umbrella frame used must be produced by well-known major manufacturers in the industry, with reliable quality and sturdy material. The procurement of umbrella fabric is also very strict. Every roll of umbrella fabric must be inspected by a running fabric machine after arriving at the factory to ensure there are no defects such as broken yarn or damage.

The process of making an umbrella is as follows:

Process 1. Large Cutting

The term "large cutting" refers to the process of cutting a roll of umbrella fabric into long strips of small width (for a three-fold umbrella, three strips can be obtained). This process can be accomplished using a cutting machine or by using a blade by the workers. Once the fabric pieces are cut, they will be sewn together (to prevent the umbrella fabric from unraveling) and then handed over to the small cutter (referred to as "small cutter" hereafter) for further processing.

Process 2. Cutting Small Fabric

The term "small cutting" refers to the process of dividing the long strips of umbrella fabric after the large cutting into individual triangular pieces, which will serve as the umbrella's surface. The workers first make a triangular wooden frame using some wooden strips, place the frame on the umbrella fabric, and then carefully cut out the pieces one by one using a blade. This process is entirely done by hand and no machinery is used.

Process 3.  Printing LOGO

There are several printing methods that can be used in the production of umbrellas, among which screen printing is the most common. First, a screen plate is made using a sun-drying machine, then the screen plate is fixed on a square wooden frame. Next, the worker pours the paint into the frame and covers the triangular umbrella fabric with the wooden frame. With a light sweep of the brush, the pattern will be printed on the umbrella fabric. This process can be completed by either machinery or manual labor. The advantage of screen printing is that the pattern is bright and clear in color. It is usually ideal to print solid-colored patterns or company logos.

Screen printing involves stretching a woven fabric, synthetic fiber fabric, or metal wire mesh onto a frame, and then creating a screen printing plate using manual engraving of an ink film or photochemical plate-making methods. During the printing process, the ink is squeezed by a scraper, passing through the mesh holes of the graphic area and transferring to the substrate to form the same graphic as the original. Screen printing equipment is simple, easy to operate, and the printing and plate-making are simple with low costs, and it has strong adaptability. Screen printing is widely used in common printed products such as color oil paintings, posters, business cards, binding covers, product labels, and printed textiles.

Process 4: Sweing umbrella canopy

After the silk-screening is completed, the triangular pieces can be sewn together by sewing machines to form different types of umbrellas. The number of triangular pieces on the umbrella surface varies from 6 to 24. Workers sew each triangular piece one by one by hand. This step is extremely important. The needle of the sewing machine should be fine and the number of stitches should be sufficient; otherwise, water may seep through when it rains.

Process 5 :  Check position、 Fixed tips and umbrella top

After the umbrella surface is completed, workers use a specially designed machine to install umbrella beads at each corner. Umbrella beads are important accessories for umbrellas, used to fix the umbrella surface onto the umbrella ribs. They are made of plastic or iron and come in various shapes to choose from. Umbrellas also need to be equipped with umbrella straps and umbrella covers. Then, the umbrella surface needs to be top-stitched (otherwise the umbrella cannot be installed on the umbrella stand) and the umbrella straps need to be sewn onto the umbrella surface.

Process 6. Sewing the Umbrella Frame

This process involves joining the umbrella fabric to the ribs. Workers must sew the fabric to the ribs by hand, stitch by stitch, without using any machinery. Typically, workers use two to three knots on each rib to secure the fabric and the ribs tightly.

Procedure 7: Quality Inspection

  1. Switch Performance Test: Hold a folding umbrella in your hand. First, the umbrella should open flexibly, reaching the top without obstruction or falling down. Once closed, it should open smoothly and reach the correct position. The switch parts should not malfunction or fall off. When using an automatic umbrella, easy opening and closing are the standards. The automatic button should not malfunction. The button should not operate on its own. Press the button gently with your hand, and the opening speed should be fast but not forceful, with a uniform and powerful force. When retracting, the pulling force should not be too heavy.
  2. Umbrella Frame Inspection: The umbrella frame should not rust easily, the electroplated surface should be smooth, the spring should be elastic, and after the umbrella frame is retracted, it should closely adhere to the umbrella shaft. The connection point of the chicken eye nails should be flexible and moderate. The binding lines of the upper, middle, and lower nests should be pressed flat, ensuring there are no sharp edges or punctures. The color of the umbrella fabric should be consistent, the patterns and stripes should be similar. For nylon fabric umbrellas, there should be a layer of anti-rain resin on the surface, and it should not be scratched or produce a metallic scratchy sound when the umbrella is retracted. When the umbrella is opened and retracted, the middle rod electroplated surface should not be scratched or produce any obvious weaving defects or leakage. There should be no starlight-like phenomenon.
  3. Umbrella Fabric Inspection: The umbrella fabric should use special umbrella fabric with a diagonal weave, and it should be flat and tight. It should not leak in heavy rain, be free of stains, holes, or skipped weaves. The color should be consistent, and the patterns and stripes should be similar. For nylon fabric umbrellas, there should be a layer of anti-rain resin on the surface, and it should not be scratched or produce any obvious weaving defects or leakage. There should be no starlight-like phenomenon. When the umbrella is opened, the umbrella shape should be full and beautiful, and it should not be in a "basin dish" or "deep bowl" shape. The detection standard for rainbow umbrellas: all the sewing threads of the umbrella frame must be cleaned and cut cleanly. There should be no any thread ends on the umbrella fabric.
  4. Other Components Inspection: The umbrella shaft should be round and shiny, without burrs, shell detachment, or other abnormal conditions. The exposed top surface of the end should be flat without being sharp, smooth without any voids. The umbrella handle shape should be beautiful, firmly fixed, comfortable to hold, and other aspects should be considered. Additionally, after opening the umbrella, shaking it should not cause the joint to loosen or have a floating feeling.

5.The detection method for the opening and closing mechanism of an umbrella

①. Opening Umbrella Test:

  1. Remove the umbrella cover, open the umbrella clip, shake the umbrella surface to make it open evenly.
  2. Press upward at the button on the umbrella handle (be careful not to hold the button) until the top of the umbrella is securely locked. Shake the umbrella to check if it is firmly closed.

②. Releasing Umbrella Test:

  1. For automatic umbrellas, press the button on the umbrella handle gently, and the umbrella will retract. For manual umbrellas, press the switch button, and pull gently to retract the umbrella and place it in the switch position.
  2. After retraction, fold the umbrella frame onto the umbrella base, then pull each umbrella leaf straight along the crease, and close the umbrella pages in the same direction. Find the umbrella clip, grasp it from the middle of the umbrella leaf, tighten the strap around the umbrella leaf and rotate it once to fasten it. When putting on the umbrella cover, rotate counterclockwise and downward to easily insert it into the umbrella cover.

Process 8: Fold Umbrella and Package

After the umbrellas are completed, they need to be inspected to ensure there are no issues. Once it is confirmed that there are no problems, the umbrellas should be covered with cloth covers and PVC rubber covers. Then, they need to be packed. After packing, the weight of each box should be checked to ensure that the quantity in each box is the same. Finally, they are stored in the warehouse and await delivery.
