How many core steps Digital Printing Process for umbrellas?

  1. Design Preparation

1) The client provides a high-definition digital file (such as PSD, TIFF, PDF, AI, etc., with a resolution of 300 dpi or higher).

2) The designer performs optimizations such as color mode conversion (RGB to CMYK), white background processing (for dark umbrellas), and pattern adaptation to the umbrella surface's curvature.

3) Key Point: Consider the impact of umbrella surface seams on pattern integrity (e.g., for block designs).

  1. Umbrella Surface Pretreatment

1) Coating: Most umbrella fabrics (especially polyester/nylon) require spraying or dipping with a pretreatment solution.

2) Function: Improves ink adhesion, prevents smearing, and enhances color vividness.

3). Process: Evenly spray → Dry (initial curing at 60-80°C).

4). Special Requirements: Dark-colored umbrellas require a white base ink (see step 4).

  1. Securing and Positioning the Umbrella

Stretch the umbrella fabric flat on the digital printing press platform (flatbed) or insert it into a cylindrical fixture (drum press), ensuring it is wrinkle-free.

Alignment of positioning marks: Ensure alignment of the pattern when splicing multiple pieces of umbrella fabric.

  1. Digital Printing

1). Equipment Type:

Industrial-grade inkjet printer: such as EPSON, Mimaki, Kornit, etc., using water-based ink (environmentally friendly) or disperse dye ink (requires thermal transfer).

2). Printing Method:

Direct-Touch Printing (DTG): Ink is sprayed directly onto the umbrella fabric (pre-treatment required).

Sublimation Transfer: Print onto transfer paper first, then heat-press onto the umbrella fabric (for longer-lasting color).

3). Printing Process:

White Ink Primer (required for dark-colored umbrellas): First, spray white ink as a base, then dry, then spray the color layer. Color Layer Printing: CMYK + Light Cyan/Light Red (for models with six or more colors, a gradient effect is enhanced).

Precision Control: Printhead resolution ≥1200dpi to ensure clear details.

  1. Drying and Curing

1) Initial Drying: Immediately after printing, use an infrared dryer or hot air system to remove moisture (to prevent bleeding).

2) Final Curing (depending on ink type):

Water-based Ink: High-temperature baking (130-160°C, 1-3 minutes) to bond the ink molecules to the fibers.

Disperse Dye Ink (Sublimation): High temperatures (180-220°C) during the transfer phase vaporize the dye and penetrate the fibers.

UV Ink: Instant UV curing (no post-treatment required, but a harder feel).

  1. Post-Processing and Quality Inspection

1) Color Fixation: Steaming may be required after the wash test to improve washability.

2) Waterproof Coating: Spraying with a waterproofing agent restores the umbrella's water-repellent properties (printing may damage the original coating).

3) Quality Inspection Focus:

Color Accuracy (Compared to Pantone Color Chart).

Pattern Clarity (Edge Roughness).

Abrasion Resistance Test (Wipe with a Wet or Dry Cloth).

Waterproofness Test (Spray with Water to Observe the Lotus Leaf Effect).

  1. Umbrella Sewing and Assembly

Qualified printed umbrellas are cut according to the process, sewn to the ribs, and then installed with handles and other accessories.

  1. Key Comparisons Between Digital Printing and Silk Screen Printing:

1) Choose Digital Printing: Complex Patterns/Multiple Colors/Gradient Logos/Order Quantity <500/Urgent Delivery Required.

2) Choose Silk Screen Printing: Single-Color Logos/Order Quantity >1000/Lowest Cost.
